All Professional Liability policies are not the same when it comes to providing coverage for a substitute physician. Each policy will limit the amount of days per policy term in which you can utilize the services of a locum tenens and have protection afforded under your policy. Locum tenens protection is not always automatic. Some companies require an application and approval before allowing a substitute physician to work in your place. Every company will have guidelines as to the “acceptable” circumstances when a locum can be used as well as who can provide services on your behalf. Do not assume that you or your corporation are fully protected if a locum substitutes for you using their own individual Professional Liability policy. Understanding your coverage is key. Read your policy, call your agent, and ask questions about your particular carrier’s guidelines for locums' coverage. |
